On Friday the boys and I went to Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum.

Each month, during the school year, they offer a homeschool class on a certain topic. The topic for the May class was VE Day.

Although we are members and would be able to attend the class at a discounted rate, I chose to put together a group which would mean an even better discount. I contacted the homeschool group here in Yamhill County as well as our former group in Portland. If I could get at least 25 people signed up then we could all get the group rate. The size of our group ended up being 38 people.

The homeschool program at the museum is managed by Robert, who happens to be a homeschool graduate. It gives a mom a good feeling to see a homeschooled boy find a great career. From what I gathered, it was his idea to offer these classes.

The VE Day class involved a history lesson with presenters dressed in WWII  clothing. The woman was dressed as Rosie the Riveter and the man was dressed in a authentic WWII uniform.

The key events leading up to VE Day were discussed including the part played by the women and children back in the USA, the rationing and the Victory Gardens. Did you know that at one point there were more than 20 million Victory Gardens across the USA. It was a way to support the troops without your family starving. When you hear about how much Americans went without for our troops it is really heart warming. It also shows how spoiled we are today when things are so easy to come by and we throw away so much.

The class also involved exciting stories around certain airplanes in the museum. This plane that Dylan and Nicholas are standing in front of is made up of all original parts. Robert was involved in the search and acquisition of some of the parts.

Joshua and Reagan are reading some of the material the museum provides.

This was our first time attending one of their homeschool days and it won’t be the last. I already have a group put together for June. That class will be held in the water park and will be on the topic of submersibles.  I plan to arrange groups for each month next year as well. It was fun, educational and I got to see some of my dear friends from Portland that I haven’t seen in months.

The best part of the day? When Michael showed up. He had been in Idaho since Monday and returned on Friday afternoon. Knowing we were there he stopped by. It was and unexpected surprise. We had missed him.
