It’s breeding season here on the Banks of Salt Creek.

It has been just over two years since I experienced my first breeding. I’m practically an old pro now. I watch to make sure it happens. I bring the girls back multiple times a day or two. I guess you could say I’m quite the Madam. Hey, we all have to take on new roles.

I will say the young ones are still hard to handle. I know they are animals and their age doesn’t equate with human age…..but one-year-old still seems so young. Oh well, they have to earn their keep around here.

Bucks. They have one job to do during one month out of the year. They should know what to do. Right?

A Tale of Two Bucks

Joe

The reality is, we have not used Surfer Joe’s services at all since we’ve been here. There have been other bucks we have chosen to use instead. That means it is going on two years since Joe has been able to …..do what bucks do….I think he forgot.

Brown Sugar was in heat BIG TIME and I put her with Joe in the “love shack” and he really acted like he had no idea what to do. Brown Sugar, on the other hand, was screaming, backing up to Joe, biting him, all to let him know she was ready and willing. Nothing.

Woody

Let me back up and remind you that Woody is our second buck. He and Joe have been together their whole lives. They have a bromance going on. Joe often mounts Woody. I’ve been told this is a dominance thing. I think he has done it so much to Woody that he forgot what to do with a doe.

Joe rubbing against Woody. Woody is gazing at the does.

The next day, instead of putting them in the love shack, I kept them in the aisle. Woody was able to see and react. Boy did he react. He butted the fencing surrounding the stall so hard that we need to repair it. He was more than willing to take Joe’s place.

My plan worked. Nothing sparks interests like competition. Woody’s reaction encouraged Joe to get it done.

Good boy!

It has been a little more than a week now and all but Halle Berry and Ramblin’ Rose have been bred. We hope. You really don’t know until three weeks go by and you don’t see them come back into heat.

If it all works out, the five already bred will kid the beginning of February 2017.

Enjoy your day,
Karen
