7) I Am Who I Am

Wow. God tells Moses His name (one of many). That name, it speaks volumes.

God is. He wasn’t created.

He lives. Life came from a living being.

God has no end. He is.

He is self sufficient. He needs nothing and no one.

8) God does the work.

I love how when God tells Moses the job he wants him to do and Moses responds “Who am I that I should go to pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” Rather than God giving Moses an ego boost God lets Moses know that it is He who will do it.  God simply says, “I will be with you.” In other words, you are the man that I will work through. Moses just needed to follow God’s lead.

It is a good lesson for all of us. Apart from God we can do nothing good. If we try it on our own then it doesn’t turn out so well (see #5). Follow God’s lead.

9) Did Moses lie to pharaoh?

Exodus 3: 8 clearly states God’s intent to permanently remove the Israelites from Egypt. Yet, in Exodus 5:3 Moses requests from pharaoh that the Israelites be allowed to take a three day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to God.

Some of the ladies in my BSF group felt that Moses was speaking a lie. Moses and Aaron were speaking for God. There are probably many different ways that the “scholars” interpret this. For me, it is simple. God would never ask anyone to lie. It is a sin and would go against His character. What I think was happening is that they were “testing the waters” so to speak. If pharaoh would agree to this then, when they came back, maybe he would be more favorable to a permanent departure.  Just know that God will never ask you to sin. With God, the end does not justify the means.

Part four coming soon.

Hugs,
