Ever since we moved here, we have missed having blueberries. In our last house we had a couple of bushes and really enjoyed them, but hadn’t added them to our little farm here yet. Well, I can say that after almost 4 years, we have blueberries! Well, blueberry bushes that is.

We bought 30 plants, they are so small and hard to see in the pictures. But, for only $6/each, we could get more plants, even if we have to wait a little longer to get all those yummy berries. We bought 10 early (Duke), 10 mid (Bluecrop) and 10 late (Elliot) producers, so we should have a pretty steady harvest throughout the summer/fall.

Today we were able to get to sawdust mulch put down so they should be happy little bushes now. We spaced the rows plenty wide so once I get the aisle smoothed and leveled out, we will plant grass and just mow in between. I think it will be really nice when it gets growing.

Unfortunately we will need to wait ’til next summer for berries, as we pull the blooms off the first year so all their energy can go into root development. We’ve waited this long, I suppose we can manage 1 more year of waiting to ensure these little beauties are vigorous and healthy. Blueberries are also a beautiful ornamental bush, so our front garden patch will look much nicer this summer and fall, even without berries.

I hope your springtime planting is going well. Until next time, cheers from the farm!
