Spitfire, had her first babies the other day. We call her a first freshener, the first time a doe has given birth (kidded). She gave birth to three little ones, a very large buckling, and two doelings. One of the doelings was very small and we had to keep a very close eye on her for the first few days to ensure she was getting enough milk. I am happy to say she is gaining weight, has lots of energy and is holding her own against her larger siblings.

The closest one is so small. We had to really make sure she was feeding and gaining weight.

The second doeling, mostly white, is a little spitfire, just like her mom.

Spitfire is a great doe, but you can certainly tell the difference between a first-time momma, and our seasoned does. The first time moms are just more confused and just kind of clueless. When you look at the seasoned does, they are relaxed, calm, and seem confident in their job.

A week ago while I was doing chores I witnessed Rosey, one of our best does, demonstrate what a good mom she is. She was busy eating hay at the feeder with the other does. She stopped eating and stepped away from the feeder, looked around and then called out quietly for her two little boys. They were on the other end of the pen goofing around, but when they heard her call their little ears perked up and they came running towards her. She patiently stood for them to nurse until they were full.

The miracles of life are a wonderful thing to experience. I am grateful we get to witness and support this in out little herd on Salt Creek.

Until next time,

Michael
