My mom came to visit a few days ago. I love it when people visit. When she arrived she gave Joshua some money to run down the lane and get a pie ( yes, homemade baked goods and ice cream so close to home). Joshua wanted to ride his bicycle so my mom gave him a plastic grocery bag to carry the pie.

I was outside with my mom when Joshua came back. Skillfully riding his bike and carrying a marion berry pie. Then I noticed it. By “it” I mean the pie. Swinging from the handlebar is the plastic bag….with the pie in it….on its side.

Being a home educating mom I thought this was a great life lesson. Into the house we went. The pie was placed on the counter and with a smile on my face I said to Joshua, “Sweetie, this is why we don’t carry a pie on its side.” I then opened the pie box…..

Ok, so this picture was taken after we each had a bite (or two). Joshua was upset and each of us gobbling eating a little seemed like the best way to let him know that the pie wasn’t ruined.

As we nibbled on the pie I was reminded of Joshua’s seventh birthday. He wanted a cake decorated with the American Flag (my little patriot) from Costco. Pretty cool looking cake. Well, Nicholas liked it so much that he (at not yet six years old) decided to carry the whole cake (in it’s box) upstairs to show it to their friends. It was heavy. He wasn’t even six. He dropped it…

Joshua was pretty upset. Until daddy explained that it wasn’t a problem because now his cake was the American Flag blowing in the wind.

Oh, if only all of life’s lessons were so sweet.

And in case you are wondering, our family doesn’t turn our noses up at desserts that have a run in with gravity (and boys).
